Matt Garza to Chicago Cubs: Trade a Fine Move for a Desperate Jim Hendry | Bleacher Report

Quite similar to the way Jerry Angelo handled the offseason of the Chicago Bears, Jim Hendry has made every move at his disposal this offseason in the hopes of saving his job, albeit with considerably less money.
Heading into the winter of 2010-11, most fans and experts knew that the Cubs did not have much money to invest. They'd have to sign players on a budget and would have to do much of their improvement through trade.
Hendry's first splash of the offseason was signing first baseman Carlos Pena. While many questioned the move due to Pena's .196 batting average, Pena brings a presence to the left side of the plate that has been lacking in Wrigley Field for the last few seasons.
The other notable move for the Cubs' general manager was the signing of fan-favorite Kerry Wood. After two years away from the Windy City, Hendry brought back his friend Wood on a bargain $1.5 million contract.
While a pair of moves like that don't scream division title, Friday's deal for Matt Garza showed that Hendry still has a move or two left up his sleeve. While some felt that the Cubs traded away their future to get Garza from Tampa Bay, many experts feel that the package, which included pitcher Chris Archer and shortstop Hak-Ju Lee, was unimpressive.
Make no mistake about it, Friday's trade shows that the Cubs plan to contend in 2011. Jim Hendry knows what's at stake this season and has acted accordingly, with three strong moves despite very little fiscal flexibility.
Garza is a pitcher who has performed well in his three seasons in Tampa Bay, despite the fact that he plays in, arguably, the toughest division in baseball. The fact that he's kept his ERA under four in the three seasons pitching against the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox shows the type of pitcher the Cubs acquired.
Whether or not Garza will be the missing piece for this Cubs team remains to be seen. It's certainly a step in the right direction, and, if it pans out, may just be the move that saves Jim Hendry's job.

WONDER WOMAN TV Pitch Fails To Sell, Shelved
WONDER WOMAN TV Pitch Fails To Sell, Shelved
0 Posted on Jan 7, 2011 in articles by Conor Kilpatrick | ShareThisBack in October we told you that legendary television producer David E. Kelly was developing a live action television revival of Wonder Woman with Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment.
This past Wednesday, as comic fans were making their way through their stacks of new books, the show made the rounds at the networks. Deadline has the whole story but it breaks down like this:
FOX passed but that was expected. Next, Wonder Woman was pitched to The CW, the sister netweork of Warner Bros. Television. They were interested but passed due to budgetary concerns. Uh oh. So then Kelly went to ABC, which was considered a good fit for the show. But ABC passed. Why? Disney owns ABC and they now own Marvel and they are in the midst of developing several TV shows based on Marvel properties. One show in particular -- the one that would star Jessica Jones -- was considered too similar to Wonder Woman. That left CBS and NBC. According to Deadline, the CBS development execs were split over Wonder Woman and ended up passing, and NBC's current executive regime change made pitching the show impossible.
So where did Wonder Woman end up? Back on the shelf, where so many great scripts reside. I spent a little bit of time in television development about ten years ago -- that shelf is big.
Deadline notes that it's possible that Kelly will make the rounds with his Wonder Woman show again sometime in the future but I'm not holding my breath.
The biggest thing that I take from this story is that now that Marvel is owned by a company that also owns a major American television network (The CW is, unfortunately, not a major network), the options that DC Entertainment has to sell TV shows are much more limited. And you can bet that DC Entertainment wants to start selling a lot more TV shows.

Thank you, Hurley! 'Lost' numbers pay off as winning Mega Millions numbers
Maybe Hurley's not so unlucky after all. During Tuesday night's lotto drawing, more than 26,000 people won $150 each simply by playing the lucky Mega Millions numbers that Hugo "Hurley" Reyes used to win the $114-million jackpot on "Lost." Interestingly, winning the lottery brought Hugo bad luck on the show.
Four of the six numbers selected in the real-life $355-million lottery matched Hurley's picks. The winning Mega Millions numbers were 4, 8, 15, 25, 47 and 42. Hurley's winning numbers were 4, 8,15, 16, 23 and 42.
Though he reported different figures, "Lost" executive producer Damon Lindelof happily Tweeted about the winnings. "9,078 people played Hurley's numbers in the MegaMillions tonight, each winning $150. #THATSSORAVEN," he wrote.
On "Lost," Hurley's magic numbers were a major recurring theme. They often popped up in the lives of several characters, and toward the end of the series, they were found written inside a cave, with castaways' names corresponding to different numbers: John Locke was 4, Hurley was 8, Sawyer was 15, Sayid was 16, Jack was 23, and Kwon was 42.
Meanwhile, Jorge Garcia, the actor who played Hurley, has been bombarded by reporters. "A tabloid news show just showed up at our FRONT DOOR hoping to get an intvw with Jorge about last night's lotto #s," Tweeted his girlfriend. "Is this really our life?"
